Summer is a beautiful time to ride and enjoy the great outdoors with your equine friend/s, but with the sunshine and heat come a view extra responsibilities. Here is a quick guide to summer horse care essentials.

1. Summer Shots
Before the bugs and heat really kick in, make sure your horse is up-to-date on summer vaccinations. West Nile, Eastern/Western Encephalitis, and Tetanus are key to keeping your horse protected during mosquito season. Talk to your vet about the right vaccine schedule for your region.

2. Fly Protection: Belly & Leg Smiles
Flies are more than just a nuisance—they can lead to skin irritations and infections. Fly sheets with belly smiles (those wide belly protection) and leg smiles (the leg covers that keep bugs off the lower limbs) are a must. They’re cute terms, but serious protection! Don’t forget fly spray and masks too.

3. Keep the Stable Clean
Flies and gnats love damp, dirty areas. A clean barn is your first line of defense. Pick stalls regularly, keep feed areas tidy, and make sure water buckets are fresh and algae-free. Fans can also help keep air circulating and deter pests.

4. Sun Safety for White-Nosed Horses
Does your horse have a pink or white nose? Then sunscreen isn’t optional—it’s necessary. Sensitive skin can easily burn in the summer sun, leading to painful blisters. Use equine-safe sunscreen daily, especially before turnout.

Taking a few extra steps in the summer means a healthier, happier horse all season long. From shots to sunblock, your equine partner depends on you to keep them cool, clean, and comfortable.

Consult your veterinarian at all time for any issue you might encounter!

Happy riding! 🐴☀️
